Welcome
to the 2011-2012 Season of Literary Masters! From Nigeria to England, with stops in Mumbai, Manhattan, and Hawaii in between, get ready for a wonderful season of page-turning literature! Grab your reading glasses, your hankies, and your highlighters--I want to hear what you have to say as we 'dig deep' into these literary treasures! Drum roll please! This season we will be reading and discussing the following:*
September: Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie--winner of the 2007 Orange Prize for fiction.
October: Nemesis by Philip Roth--this author, perhaps the most
decorated of all American literary luminaries, is the 2011 winner of the
Man Booker International Prize.
November: A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan--winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the 2011 National Critics Circle Award. December: To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf--a classic in every sense of the word. January: The Lost Kingdom
by Julia Flynn Siler--this is our non-fiction book for the season, and I
think you'll like where it takes us--to Hawaii! Siler has been a
finalist for the James Beard Award and the Gerald Loeb Award for
distinguished reporting. February: The Country of Men by Hisham Matar--shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Guardian First Book Award in 2006. March: Last Man in Tower by Aravind Adiga--you know this author from his winning the Man Booker Award in 2008. May: The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach-- I predict this to be a future award winner! Mother/ Daughter Book Groups: Titles will be announced on a monthly basis. These groups are closed to new members. If you would like to form your own Mother/ Daughter book group, please contact Liz.
*I am reserving the right to change
any title as I see fit! Don't worry--I always have my Literary Masters book group members in mind if and when I do this!
